They are known as mule-women or porters in Melilla. Their job is to transport heavy bags across the border from Spain to Morocco. Some make 3 or 4 trips a day to the “Barrio Chino” (Chinese Quarter) carrying up to 80kg.

These are women who risk their lives by being put into extremely grueling physical work in conditions of semi-slavery.

Hand woven straps like ribbons and laces, play a critical role in the collection. The pieces are created using the arts of basketry, macramé, rub weaving, braiding and knotting.

The knots symbolize the ropes of the porters and slavery.

The pieces worked in elastic represent the preparation before the journey, based in hiding all the material they can by wrapping it to their skin with plastic film.

The straps play an important role in this collection: it is woven together and used to hold parts of the pieces.

The load, backpacks, layers, etc. is the inspiration for the patterns for this collection, as well as a line of oversize pieces.

The prints are screen printed and remind us of the barriers with typical Arabic ornaments.

White, crude and earth are the predominant colors that evoke mud and khaki tones, and as a result, bring us closer to the earth and restore harmony.

For the layers, transparent and semi-transparent textiles, as well as hemstitching are used. The fabrics are pure linen, pure cotton, silk satin, silk voile and organic cotton from Andalusia.
